Gojira – “Stranded” (Music Video)

It’s been four years since we last heard Gojira on their critically acclaimed album, L’Enfant Sauvage, and although it’s been known for a while that they were working on a new record, it wasn’t until a few days ago that we got to hear what that album might sound like. June 17th will see the release of the band’s sixth studio album, Magma, and their latest music video shows off the record’s first single, “Stranded.” Compared to some of their past material, this latest single makes it clear that the band is taking things in a much different direction, and fan reaction seems to be split.

As a whole, it lacks some of the complexity that made albums like From Mars to Sirius so great, and the lyrics aren’t anything to write home about, either. The main takeaway, for me, is that the music is more easily digestible, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I still think the song is fun to listen to, but there is a part of me that wishes it was a little meatier. Aside from Duplantier’s vocals, which sound great, there isn’t much here that stands out as being unique or innovative. Everything kind of combines to create a pretty standard metal song, and although I’m still excited for Magma, there is a quote from Duplantier in a recent Rolling Stone piece that has me worried:

“We want a short album,” he says. “Something less epic than what we usually do. People’s attentions are shorter now. So a lot of the songs are four minutes.”

“Stranded” can be found below, and you can find physical pre-orders online, as well as digital pre-orders from various retailers.
