Late last night, Kendrick Lamar came back on the scene and had the internet in an uproar… again. This has become K. Dot’s M.O. at this point. Recede into the background, stay silent, quietly spread the gasoline, and then proceed to toss a lit match. Whether the reaction is always warranted is a discussion for another day, but there’s no denying its potency, as he always gets people talking, which is exactly what he did last night by releasing the fourth part to his “The Heart” series, the last of which came shortly before the release of his commercial debut good kid, m.A.A.d city.
By now, you’ve seen the rumors, and while it’s cute to see people gossip, I don’t want to engage in it because I find it silly. If any other rapper uses battle raps in his or her verses, no one bats an eye, but when Kendrick does it, he has to be going at someone. How about this, let’s focus on what we know: the song is incredible, Kendrick sounds as hungry as ever, the production is excellent, and the structure helps keep things interesting through repeated listens. If this somehow ends up igniting a friendly beef between contemporaries, cool, but until then, I’m more concerned about what’s coming on April 7th.
