After a two-month break, Illmac’s Raising The Bar series is back, and like we all expected, the Portland emcee continues catching bodies with ease. To be honest, I don’t know what I love more about this entry: the beat, the schemes, or the lyrics. Illmac has always littered his verses with insane quotables, but he’s on another level here, effortlessly switching between braggadocio and the political. To top it off, the man must have three or four lungs, because I don’t know how he managed some of the transitions without taking a breath. It’s a thing of beauty, honestly.
If you want to shorten the wait for the fifth entry, vote for him as the Caddy Royale winner here. On the off-chance he doesn’t win, you can hear him next week on Ethereal, his collaborative album with fellow Sandpeople wordsmith Goldini Bagwell.
